Sapphire has a melting point of 2040 degrees C, Mohs (Mohs) hardness scale of up to 9, refractive index of 1.76 to 1.78. Without impurities, sapphire can be a superior optical window material because it is clear and transparent throughout the visible light range, even as far away as ultraviolet and infrared light. With such characteristics, it's no wonder sapphire has ever been a precious gem. These same properties also make sapphire attractive for non-precious applications, and today's state-of-the-art synthetic crystal growth and processing technologies are driving the increasing demand for this material.
The window is a flat plate with two parallel or wedge-shaped surfaces, and is usually used as a protective window for electronic sensors or external environment detectors. The window does not change the magnification of the system.
